Introduction

Bosses are the heart of ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition. With more than 100 bosses spread across the base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, every major encounter is a distinct puzzle — each boss has telegraphed attacks, exploitable weaknesses and a specific flow that rewards study over brute force. This section collects strategies for the bosses that actually block your progress: story shardbearers like Margit the Fell Omen and Godrick the Grafted, legendary walls like Starscourge Radahn and Malenia Blade of Miquella, and the DLC's brutal newcomers like Messmer the Impaler. For every boss you will find its location, its threat tier, the weaknesses that make it easier, and a step-by-step plan that works on Nintendo Switch 2 — including which Spirit Ashes, weapons and builds to bring.

Wall Boss Breakdown

B

Margit, the Fell Omen

Early Wall

The first boss that actually blocks new players

Attack PatternMargit mixes fast dagger combos, a long-range cane sweep and a devastating golden hammer slam. His delayed attacks are specifically designed to punish players who panic-roll the moment they see movement. The best counter is to stay mid-range, bait the overhead slam, and punish the long recovery with two or three light attacks.
CountersUse Margit's Shackle twice for free staggers, summon the gold NPC Rogier near the fog wall, and bring the Jellyfish Spirit Ash. Bleed from the Uchigatana or the Reduvia dagger also melts his health bar. At around level 25-30 with a +3 weapon the fight becomes very manageable.
B

Godrick the Grafted

Shardbearer

Stormveil Castle's grafting monster

Attack PatternGodrick's first phase uses wide axe swings and a spinning hurricane attack. At half health he grafts a dragon head onto his arm, gaining fire breath and a long-range flame slam. The dragon-arm slam has a long telegraph and a long recovery — that is your main punish window in phase two.
CountersSummon Nepheli Loux by talking to her in the castle, plus a Spirit Ash. His attacks are slow enough to roll through, and he is very weak to bleed. The Somber Smithing Stones in the castle let you upgrade your weapon before the fight, which is more impactful than leveling.
B

Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon

Shardbearer

The magic duel at Raya Lucaria

Attack PatternPhase one is a survival puzzle: Rennala floats while her scholars chant a spell — kill the singing scholar surrounded by the golden aura to bring her down for a critical hit, three times. Phase two is a pure mage duel with full-moon spells, a summon of spirit wolves and a devastating comet attack.
CountersClose the distance in phase two — her ranged spells are brutal, but she is fragile up close. Heavy attacks and jumping attacks stagger her quickly. The Radagon Soreseal and magic-resistant talismans help, and a quick melee weapon like a katana or rapier with Square Off makes phase two trivial.
A

Starscourge Radahn

Legendary

The festival of war in Caelid

Attack PatternRadahn is a gigantic mounted warrior with a colossal bow that fires gravity arrows across the arena, then a melee phase with sweeping greatsword combos. In phase two he crashes down as a meteorite and gains a devastating gravity slam and his signature gravity magic.
CountersThis is the game's great summon battle — the arena is packed with NPC ally signs you can revive endlessly. Stay mounted on Torrent, chip him with bleed or Scarlet Rot, and let the NPCs tank. Radahn is also weak to Scarlet Rot, so the Rotten Breath incantation or a rot-infused weapon shortens the fight drastically.
S

Malenia, Blade of Miquella

Hardest

The legendary wall of the Haligtree

Attack PatternMalenia's signature attack is Waterfowl Dance — a multi-slash flurry that can one-shot through a full health bar. She also lifesteals on every hit, so trading blows is a losing strategy. Her first phase is a duel of precision; her second phase adds Scarlet Rot and a clone-slash follow-up.
CountersFor Waterfowl Dance: run away during the first two flurries, then roll into the third. Alternatively, break her poise with the Blasphemous Blade or a heavy weapon and stagger-lock her. Bloodhound's Step dodges it entirely. Mimic Tear with a bleed build is the most reliable counter for most players.

Core Mechanics

Boss fights in ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition follow a consistent logic. Every boss telegraphs its attacks — a wind-up, a tell, a roar — and your job is to learn those tells and respond with the right counter: dodge-roll through the swing, block with a greatshield, or jump over a ground slam. Most bosses have a phase transition around half health where their moveset changes and often becomes faster or more aggressive. Bosses are also staggerable: deal enough poise damage with heavy attacks, charged attacks or weapon skills and the boss falls to its knees for a critical hit. Finally, almost every major boss can be fought with allies — Spirit Ashes, summoned NPCs or other players — which splits aggro and dramatically reduces the difficulty of learning a fight.

Advantages

The boss strategies in this section condense hundreds of hours of community experience into plans that actually work on Switch 2. Each entry explains the boss's attack patterns in plain language, the exact weaknesses you should exploit — be it Scarlet Rot, bleed, a specific element, or simply stance-breaking with heavy attacks — and the loadout that gives you the best chance on your first attempt. The tier list helps you prioritize: you can safely delay optional bosses until you are stronger, while the S-tier walls like Malenia and Messmer come with dedicated, step-by-step strategies. For players who dislike grinding, knowing the fastest viable strategy for each boss is the difference between hours of frustration and a clean kill.

Challenges

The main weakness of the boss section is that ELDEN RING's bosses can be beaten in many different ways, and a strategy that works for one player's build may not translate perfectly to another's. Status-effect strategies like Scarlet Rot and bleed require specific weapons and materials, and some cheese tactics rely on positioning that can be patched or that feels cheap to use. Bosses in the base game were also rebalanced over time, so numbers can shift between versions. The DLC bosses in particular demand high Scadutree Blessing levels — attempting them without collecting fragments makes even the best strategy feel underpowered. Finally, the sheer number of bosses means coverage focuses on the ones that matter for progression, so minor dungeon bosses are grouped rather than individually detailed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which boss should I fight first?+
For most players the intended first major boss is Margit the Fell Omen, guarding Stormveil Castle in Limgrave. Before you fight him, explore the Weeping Peninsula to the south — it is full of upgrade materials, a Sacred Tear for your flask and a Golden Seed, and it lets you reach around level 25-30. If Margit still feels too hard, summon the NPC Rogier, use Margit's Shackle twice during the fight, and bring the Jellyfish Spirit Ash. If you want an even easier first win, the optional Tree Sentinel can be skipped entirely until you outlevel it.
What is the hardest boss in the game?+
The community consensus is that Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elphael is the hardest boss in the base game, largely because of her Waterfowl Dance attack which can one-shot a full-health player who doesn't know the dodge pattern. In the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, the Promised Consort Radahn and Messmer the Impaler are considered the hardest, especially at low Scadutree Blessing levels. These bosses punish panic rolling and demand either precise timing or a build with high damage output and survivability — bleed builds and Mimic Tear are the most common reliable counters.
Do I need to beat every boss to finish the game?+
No. The main story requires you to defeat the six shardbearer bosses that hold Great Runes — Godrick, Rennala, Rykard, Radahn, Morgott and Mohg (or the Fire Giant alternative path), then the final gauntlet of Maliketh, Godfrey and the Elden Beast. The other 90+ bosses are optional, though they drop valuable items, gear and Rune Arc rewards. For the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC you only need to defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood to access it. Optional bosses are a great source of upgrade materials, so most players clear many of them even though they are not required.

Quick Tips

💡

Bring a Spirit Ash to every boss fight you can. Even the weakest summon splits aggro and gives you windows to heal and land charged attacks — in ELDEN RING, fighting a boss alone is a self-imposed challenge, and the game hands you summons specifically to make learning fights fairer.

💡

Watch the boss's hands and weapon, not the camera. Almost every attack in ELDEN RING is telegraphed by a wind-up, and the tells are clearer when you watch the enemy model. If you die, spend your next attempt just dodging and studying — you will learn the patterns faster than by flailing.

💡

Upgrade your weapon before you blame the boss — a low-upgrade weapon makes even easy bosses feel impossible. If a boss takes more than two minutes to reach phase two, leave, find smithing stones, and come back with a higher-level weapon, because the damage jump from weapon upgrades is dramatic and almost always outweighs a few extra character levels.
